About Us
Students at Pickens School, are housed in a modern building and have access to current technology. This continues a long tradition of quality education for our community.

History
The current facility was completed October, 2006. This building was constructed to replace the school that was built in 1936, with its first class graduating in 1937. The 1936 school was built to replace the Pickens School that had been destroyed by fire in the previous school term.
Actr
Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, schools teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math. The focus of PBIS is prevention not punishment.
Pickens School is a participant in the National Archery in the Schools Program. We currently have 11 students from grades 4-12. The team has traveled to archery shoots throughout the state. They participate in the state archery competition in Charleston and go on to the national competition in Kentucky.
Our school also has a very active 4-H club. The students meet monthly to plan activities such as environmental and safety programs that are presented at the school.
Students take 2 to 3 field trips each year including visits to colleges and educational sites. An end-of-year trip to a recreational location is a reward to students with good behavior.

Parents and Community
Our local business partners and community members are very supportive of the school and the Pickens School Archery Team. The school has community volunteers that donate time for art projects, field day activities, and our high tunnel Plant the Seed project just to name a few.
Technology
Pickens School has a fiber optic (high speed) connection to the Internet. This year Randolph County will be supplying Chromebooks for all students (K-12 grades) and teachers will execute assignments using Google-classroom. This plan is set in place to help achieve the goal of continuing learner for our students in case of 'regular school day' interruptions. Students will be using their Chromebooks in class and taking them home each night to complete assignments. Desktop computers are also available in the Computer Lab and K-2 classroom.
Middle and High School students take some of their elective classes on-line through the WV Virtual School and math classes through a video connection to Elkins High School.
School Policies
At the beginning of the school year, each student receives a copy of the Pickens School Handbook. which provides all pertinent information about the school year and our school policies. If you have not received your family's copy of the handbook, please ask your child about it and, if it cannot be located, contact the school for a copy or download a PDF copy(coming at a later date). Please note several changes that are taking place this school year, particularly with our school's nutrition program and with our discipline program. If you have any questions please contact the school.
